As a coworking space, we minimize the costs and perceived barriers to starting a small business. We are in the business of helping other small businesses grow, and provide shared services to maximize affordability for startups and people who, for whatever reason, aren’t able to take a part time business to scale.
In Minnesota, the latest self-employment business statistics are very interesting. For example, the Minnesota Secretary of State Office data shows we had 67,008 new registered businesses in 2017, or 184 per day, or nearly two new businesses every 15 minutes around the clock!
While we have laws defining responsibilities of hourly vs. salaried employees, many people feel like they are tied to their employer far more than 8 hours a day, and many people report that the increased expectations drain them, leading to burnout. Ironically, that is often what pushes people to become entrepreneurs. Millennials in particular have made an intentional shift to entrepreneurship, freelancing as 9-to-5 jobs lose appeal. Many say they are distrusting of the level of loyalty of employers, and would rather depend on themselves for a stable income, coupled with the flexibility of working on a schedule that is conducive to multiple interests.
National Small Business Week 2018 (NSBW) is right around the corner—April 29 to May 5, making this an ideal time to discuss a changing workforce leaving the 9-to-5 grind.
