5 Quirky Things Every Office Needs

Empty desk

There are plenty of business-friendly suggestions of what your office needs. Sticky notes, paper clips, and a plant in the corner, sure. But sometimes what you need isn’t the norm. Instead, it’s a little quirky.

We’ve got five off-kilter suggestions of what every office needs. You might not find these in the office supply store, but they’re key to creating a productive and enjoyable office where people want to work.

1. Toys

Yeah, spare us the ‘toys are for kids’ sentiment. Nobody is suggesting you turn your place of business into a toy store. But you need something creative: A desk toy, a stress ball, a fidget, blocks, Lego, markers to color, etc. You can hide it in a drawer 99% of the time, but you need something that allows you to play. Go respectable with a putting setup if you must, but have something tactile that unlocks creativity. It’s good for morale and breaking through those creative roadblocks.

2. A Place to Sit

OK, obviously you have an office chair. But you need a place to sit that’s not your desk chair. It’s nice to give guests a place to sit, but this is for you. Hopefully it’s more comfortable and relaxed. This chair can offer a different perspective. It’s a chance to get away from the screen, away from your desk, and engage your brain in a different way. It’s amazing how physically moving can nudge your brain to tackle a thorny problem from a new angle. Thankfully Evolve also has plenty of common areas where you can get that change of scenery and get a mental reset.

3. Music

Offices have a reputation for stifling silence or mediocre Muzak. Something bland and inoffensive that can be easily tuned out. Yikes. Instead, you need to be able to shut the door or put on the headphones and play something that can help you focus. Find your groove, whether it’s orchestration with no distracting lyrics or the latest bubble-gum pop. Make a playlist. Add to it regularly. Swap favorite singles with your office mates. Music can boost productivity, so lean into the power of song to help focus your brain. This can be highly personal, so those headphones might be vital.

4. Kudos

Your office needs something that celebrates your success. You should show off your wins. It’s not about bragging or ego, but a daily reminder that your work matters. Maybe it’s an award your team won or a product you’re proud of. It could be a team photo or a piece of corporate history. Maybe you frame a letter from a satisfied customer. It’s more than a generic motivational poster, it’s a specific connection to your business that inspires your team.

5. Art

Every office needs art. Now office art can be a particularly bland experience that just interrupts a beige wall with a beige painting. That’s no good. You want something inspiring, something arresting, something that grabs the eye. Art is subjective, so this can be a challenge. But find something that speaks to you. There’s no need to be pretentious—an interesting movie poster or your kid’s colorful creation will do wonders.
