5 Branding Tips for Small Businesses

Small businesses face an uphill battle, but branding is one way to stand out from the crowd. A consistent visual look and feel, style, and voice will give you consistency and professionalism.

5 Branding Tips

Here are five branding tips for small businesses:

1. Get a Logo

Your business needs a logo. Even if you’re a tiny operation, you need a visual identity in today’s digital age. Get a logo. At the very least, investing in a logo communicates that you’re a serious business. And a good designer can communicate a lot more in a simple logo.

2. Get Multiple Versions of the File

Having a logo is great. You’re going to need it. But you also need multiple versions of that logo.  A good designer will deliver everything you need, but double check. You should have a print version, a web version, a black and white version, a version that works with a white background and one that works on a dark background, etc.

3. What’s Your Tagline?

A good tagline can help people quickly understand what you do. Even if what you do is obvious (tacos), a good tagline can help people decide why they should do business with you (“Home of weird and wonderful taco flavors.”). It makes you stand out. It helps people make that crucial decision that leads to a sale.

4. Colors

A good branding strategy should include colors. You don’t need to go nuts with exact Pantone numbers, but you should have some consistency. If you do an event with a booth, you shouldn’t have to think twice about what color the table cloth is. Your brand colors should decide that for you. It will help create a consistent and professional look.

5. Be Unique and Authentic

Branding is about standing out from the crowd, so you want to be uniquely you. Don’t just steal a look from another company. The best way to do that is to be authentic. Lean into who you are as a company. If you’re casual and laid back, make that part of your brand. If you’re a neat freak, go above and beyond (an auto shop that vacuums interiors with every service would be a perfect way to live out this brand attribute).
